New AIA research calls for school designs that prioritize student well-being |
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has released a new report, Let Kids Be Kids: A Progress Report on Schools and Safety, highlighting the relationship between school design, student safety, emotional well-being, and educational success. The research argues that effective school safety strategies should extend beyond traditional security measures to create learning environments that promote inclusion, belonging, mental health, and community engagement. Designed as a practical, modular resource, the report provides case studies, research-informed recommendations, and actionable guidance for architects, educators, school administrators, policymakers, and community stakeholders. It aims to support both the development of new educational facilities and improvements to existing schools. Co-author Dina Miris Sorensen emphasized that safe schools should not only protect students from harm but also provide welcoming, supportive environments where children feel valued and empowered to succeed. The findings encourage a more comprehensive approach to educational infrastructure that considers students' broader developmental and emotional needs.
