Virginia targets academic improvement and child care expansion ahead of 2027 legislative session |
Virginia Secretary of Education Jeffrey Smith has outlined the Spanberger administration's education priorities ahead of the 2027 General Assembly session, emphasizing early childhood education, stronger academic performance, educator recruitment, and college and career readiness. Key initiatives include expanding evidence-based literacy and math instruction, improving student support services, strengthening career and technical education, and integrating artificial intelligence responsibly into classrooms. The administration is also exploring ways to address Virginia's shortage of at least 140,000 child care slots. One proposed funding option would cost $4.5bn annually over 10 years, expand access to an additional 240,000 children, and cap family child care expenses at 0% to 10% of household income. Lawmakers may also consider reforming the state's school funding formula to better reflect individual student needs. Smith has emphasized measurable improvements in reading, math, attendance, and student outcomes, alongside sustained investment in educators and school resources. The Department of Education is expected to release its final strategic plan in November, ahead of the legislative session beginning January 13, 2027.
