Texas voucher dashboard reveals spending gaps |
The Texas Comptroller has launched a dashboard detailing the distribution of Education Savings Account vouchers, with more than $270m in taxpayer funding reportedly spent. Of the 111,295 students receiving vouchers, more than half qualified under the low-income category, while nearly 83% had not attended public school the previous year. Pre-K students received the largest number of awards by grade, totaling 23,732. Houston ISD led districts with 12,411 applicants and 4,020 funded students, followed by Dallas ISD. Approximately 17% of voucher recipients have disabilities. Despite providing demographic and geographic information, the dashboard does not disclose how families spend voucher funds, which schools or services receive payments, or why 33,878 eligible students declined participation. State officials cite student privacy concerns, while critics argue greater financial transparency is necessary to ensure accountability.
