AI adoption outpaces governance

Research from Optro indicates that many organisations are rapidly integrating AI agents into their operations, but often without adequate governance frameworks. The report, titled When AI Leaves the Chat and Enters the Workflow, highlights that one in three organisations use AI in critical workflows, yet nearly 30% have never tested for potential failures. “The reality today is that agentic AI adoption is fast outpacing governance,” said Guru Sethupathy, GM of AI Governance at Optro. “But to harness its potential responsibly, leaders must recognize that governance models designed for static manual processes cannot keep pace with autonomous systems of action.”

Syria has opened the International Forum on Education and Innovation in Damascus, gathering officials and experts to discuss educational reform and workforce development. UAE worker protection schemes pay out more than Dh832m

The UAE's worker protection system has disbursed over Dh832m in compensation to more than 44,000 workers in the first half of 2026. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) reported that over Dh320m was paid under the Workers Protection Programme, while the Unemployment Insurance Scheme provided over Dh512m to jobless workers. Dalal Alshehhi, Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Protection at MoHRE, said: "The positive results recorded reflect our commitment to fostering a safe, stable, and sustainable work environment." The ministry also highlighted significant progress in worker awareness programmes and improved accommodation standards.

Qatar reminds employers to comply with summer working hours

The Ministry of Labour in Qatar has reminded employers and workers to comply with summer working hours regulations due to high temperatures. The ministry said that regulating working hours reduces exposure to heat and protects workers' health. Outdoor work is allowed before 10am, while direct sunlight work is banned from 10am to 3:30pm, resuming after that time. The ministry emphasised the importance of adhering to these hours to prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure occupational safety. The regulation is in effect from June 1 to September 15.

PwC US CEO embraces custom AI assistant as firm pushes technology adoption

PwC US chief executive Paul Griggs has developed a custom AI assistant, dubbed “PG’s Whisperer,” which he uses throughout the day as the Big Four firm encourages greater adoption of artificial intelligence. Griggs created the assistant using two different AI models and keeps multiple chat systems open across his phone and computer, allowing him to compare information and responses. His increased use of AI comes as PwC experiences what Griggs described as its strongest pipeline of new clients.

California stonecutters fall ill with deadly disease

A new study from California's Department of Public Health indicates that Latino men in the state who cut artificial-stone countertops are falling ill from silicosis, an incurable and deadly lung disease, at an unprecedented rate. The number of local cases reported has increased more than tenfold in less than four years, from 2019 through 2022 there were 47 cases; from 2023 through August of this year, there have been 571. Latino men account for about 98% of cases. “It's become clear that [ . . . ] engineered stone countertops . . . cannot be manufactured safely and economically,” said David Michaels, professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University and co-author of the study. “This is a product that we do not need that is damaging the lungs of hundreds of workers [in California] and probably thousands of workers across the country.”

Sweden's IF Metall ends Tesla strike

Swedish trade union IF Metall is calling off its three-year dispute with Tesla after the ‌carmaker bought out all the union's striking members at the company. "This means that the conflict no longer has any effect," the union said. The dispute started in October 2023 when Tesla mechanics went on strike as the union demanded collective ⁠agreements with the automaker, which does not have manufacturing facilities in Sweden, but whose electric cars are serviced by IF Metall union members. "We can conclude that Tesla is so strongly opposed to collective agreements that they would rather buy out employees who are members of the union than give them safe conditions," IF Metall ‌observed.

Russian economy to resume growth

Russia's economy likely grew in the second quarter after its first contraction in three years. Gross domestic product expanded by 0.9% in April-June from a year earlier, according to the median estimate of economists polled by Bloomberg, after declining in the first three months of the year. The country's wartime economy has been driven by increased government spending and double-digit wage growth. Growth has also been lifted by a favourable calendar with more working days. Bloomberg says the rebound may be short-lived as Ukraine steps up the intensity and reach of attacks on critical sites.

Migrant workers in rural Korean greenhouses continue working in extreme heat

On August 6, temperatures inside greenhouses in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, exceeded 38 degrees Celsius amid a severe heat wave warning. Migrant workers, including a Nepali man identified as A, reported being forced to work without breaks, contrary to government guidelines. A said: "My employer says I need to keep working." A lack of cooling measures and disregard for safety regulations in Korea have led to rising heat-related illnesses, with 2,665 cases reported nationwide this summer. Kim Dal-sung, head of the Pocheon Migrant Workers Center, emphasised the need for enforceable safety regulations to protect workers.

Trump administration sued over its targeting of ICC

Four human rights groups, the American Friends Service Committee, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Human Rights Watch, and the Open Society Institute, have filed a lawsuit in US federal court challenging the Trump administration’s sanctions against International Criminal Court prosecutors and judges, a UN human rights expert, and three Palestinian human rights groups. The groups say that the sanctions regime, and the executive order on which it is based, undermines access to justice for victims of serious international crimes around the globe. The US state department and justice department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
